Accessorize with Toys! Workshop

Ever wonder what to do with those random small toy parts too dear to toss but no longer any fun? Learn how to revitalize old toys into bangles, earrings and brooches by utilizing basic jewelry techniques. San Francisco designers, emiko oye and Shana Astrachan (members of the Metal Arts Critique Collective) will show you how to approach jewelry making with alternative materials and simple craft tools. Participants are encouraged to bring small plastic and rubber toy parts to work with or contribute. All ages welcome; especially great for families.

Accessorize with Toys! workshop was developed by emiko oye in 2006 for Make Magazine's 1st inaugural Makerfaire, held in San Mateo, CA, and now also in Austin, TX. This recycled jewelry workshop runs annually in conjunction with Swap-o-rama-rama, a massive clothing swap/DIY event at the faire, and draws hundreds of people over a weekend in May. Supplying a plentiful variety of discarded/recycled toy and game parts with basic jewelry findings, emiko and Shana help guide participants into actualizing their ideas. The event has inspired kids and parents alike, in creating necklaces, bracelets, brooches, earrings, and small sculptures together, while gaining a new perspective on transforming "trash." At a time when schools are cutting arts programs, this provides a much needed outlet for kids of all ages, promoting the creative process through problem solving, using tools, and having a hand in making their own unique creations. The workshop is free with admission to Makerfaire.

In addition to Makerfaire, Accessorize with Toys! has also been held at various locations in San Francisco, including the San Francisco Museum of Craft + Design, November 2008. Sponsors include UGlu and SCRAP.
